Abstract

Children with Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) often exhibit tantrums characterized by prolonged crying, throwing objects, withdrawing, and hitting objects when their wishes are not met. In this case, the frequency and severity of tantrums increased between approximately ages 11 and 14, causing significant difficulties for parents and therapists in managing the participant’s negative emotions. These circumstances prompted the need for a structured intervention to reduce maladaptive behaviors and enhance emotional expression. The aim of the intervention was to reduce the frequency of tantrum behaviors and to improve the participant’s ability to express emotions verbally. The method involved implementing Muppet Play Therapy across seven sessions, which included phases of therapeutic relationship building, doll-mediated therapy implementation, psychoeducation for therapists and caregivers, and evaluation and follow-up. Assessments were conducted through direct observation and recording of tantrum frequency, interviews and reports from parents and therapists, session recordings, and evaluation of verbal communication abilities before and after the intervention. Results showed a significant reduction in tantrum frequency following the intervention, accompanied by improved verbal communication for expressing feelings, better compliance with instructions, and more appropriate
emotional expression; active support from therapists and caregivers played an important role in maintaining these improvements.

Anak-anak dengan Gangguan Perkembangan Intelektual (IDD) sering menunjukkan tantrum yang ditandai dengan menangis berkepanjangan, melempar benda, menarik diri, dan memukul benda ketika keinginan mereka tidak terpenuhi. Dalam kasus ini, frekuensi dan tingkat keparahan tantrum meningkat antara usia 11 dan 14 tahun, menyebabkan kesulitan yang signifikan bagi orang tua dan terapis dalam mengelola emosi negatif peserta. Keadaan ini mendorong perlunya intervensi terstruktur untuk mengurangi perilaku maladaptif dan meningkatkan ekspresi emosi. Tujuan intervensi adalah untuk mengurangi frekuensi perilaku tantrum dan meningkatkan kemampuan peserta untuk mengekspresikan emosi secara verbal. Metode yang digunakan meliputi penerapan Terapi Bermain Boneka (Muppet Play Therapy) dalam tujuh sesi, yang meliputi fase-fase membangun hubungan terapeutik, implementasi terapi yang dimediasi boneka, psikoedukasi untuk terapis dan pengasuh, serta evaluasi dan tindak lanjut. Penilaian dilakukan melalui observasi langsung dan pencatatan frekuensi tantrum, wawancara dan laporan dari orang tua dan terapis, rekaman sesi, dan evaluasi kemampuan komunikasi verbal sebelum dan sesudah intervensi. Hasilnya menunjukkan penurunan frekuensi tantrum yang signifikan setelah intervensi, disertai dengan peningkatan komunikasi verbal untuk mengungkapkan perasaan, kepatuhan yang lebih baik terhadap instruksi, dan ekspresi emosi yang lebih tepat; dukungan aktif dari terapis dan pengasuh memainkan peran penting dalam mempertahankan peningkatan ini.
