Islam Jawa: Varian Keagamaan Masyarakat Muslim dalam Tinjauan Antropologi

Abstract
Development of Islam in Java has a unique character, and interesting to study. This is because the spread of Islam in Java, causes the process of acculturation and assimilation with the local culture and traditions. Some research have been done by experts, both Western researchers, such as: Clifford Geertz (1989), Mark R. Woodward (2006), Andrew Beatty (2001), as well as researchers Indonesia, among others: Nur Shams (2005), Muhaimin AG (2001), Ernie Budiwanti (2000), have proved the thesis above. The findings of the researchers stated that religious people always assimilate to the culture of the Muslim community that has strongly been built by Hinduism, long time ago before the arrival of Islam. In addition to these researchers, there are Western scholars concerned with the process of assimilation of Islam with local traditions, which is Andrew Beatty. This paper is to review the results of research conducted by Beatty who uses ethnography.

Abstrak
Perkembangan Islam di Jawa memiliki karakter yang unik, dan menarik untuk diteliti. Hal ini dikarenakan penyebaran agama Islam di Jawa menimbulkan proses akulturasi dan asimilasi dengan budaya dan tradisi lokal.. Beberapa penelitian yang sudah dilakukan oleh para ahli, baik para peneliti Barat, semisal: Clifford Geertz (1989), Mark R. Woodward (2006), Andrew Beatty (2001), maupun peneliti Indonesia, antara lain: Nur Syam (2005), Muhaimin AG (2001), Erni Budiwanti (2000), telah membuktikan tesis di atas. Hasil temuan dari para peneliti tersebut menyatakan bahwa, keberagamaan masyarakat muslim selalu berasimilasi dengan budaya masyarakat yang telah dibangun secara kuat oleh Hinduisme, jauh sebelum datangnya agama Islam. Selain peneliti tersebut, terdapat sarjana Barat yang memiliki perhatian terhadap proses asimilasi Islam dengan tradisi lokal, yaitu adalah Andrew Beatty. Tulisan ini ingin mereview hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan oleh Beatty yang menggunakan etnografi.
