It comes with the difficulties of conducting the teaching-learning process and achieving the students’ comprehension and understanding of the subjects, especially science. It is worsened by the thematic learning model, where students are required to understand more than one learning concept in one learning sub-theme. The offline teaching, which is scheduled in the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic year is a momentum to reshape the thinking concept of elementary school students. One of the concerns is physics. Physics is very important in the development of student knowledge, because of its continuous application in everyday life. In addition, the use of natural science in secondary schools is wide. Another important point is that students have less ability to understand new knowledge. Therefore, practice is needed to support the learning of theories. Considering this problem, the team of community service of Engineering Faculty Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang used magnetic and electric kits to explain the concept of energy and force to students. These topics are difficult for students, and they need to learn them with direct practice. Learning using the physics kits, magnet and electric, made students can understand better the basic concepts of magnetism and electricity. Moreover, students can practice their motoric skills using the kits. Students can also develop their creativity and innovation by varying the experiments with the kits. Lots of practice with magnets and electric kits helped teachers to evaluate students’ ability and absorption of the materials. With this learning media, the learning provided by the teacher can be more interesting and fun for students. Therefore, students can improve their knowledge and skills in understanding concepts and their knowledge of physics.
Sentot Achmadi, Andinusa Rahmandhika, Ali Mokhtar, Amiirohana Mayasari, Ali Saifullah Copyright (c) 2023 SCI-TECH MEDIA: COMMUNITY SERVICE JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25865 Sat, 15 Apr 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Increasing production capacity at Lontong industry “Pak To” https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25878
The program of community empowerment was conducted at Lontong industry “Pak To” which is located in Merjosari, Malang. The Lontong industry has been producing Lontong since 2009. Based on the observation, identification, and interview by the team, this industry had the main problem that they were unable to fulfil the high market demand. As a result, this industry must refuse the orders as they are only able to produce lontong in their limited capacity. Considering this condition, the community service team conducted an analysis, design, and manufacture of lontong steamer to overcome the industry problems. The lontong steamer was designed to cook 500 pieces of lontong for production. The material for the lontong steamer is a 304 stainless steel plate with 0.6 mm thickness. It was selected for this steamer because it is food grade. 304 stainless steel plate has good mechanical characteristics. It is non-toxic for food and safe for consumption tools. Moreover, this material has long durability for household appliances as it has heat resistance characteristics and relatively has a low corrosion rate. The lontong steamer was designed in three main parts: the steamer body, bottom, and lid. The plate was measured and cut in a different dimension for each part. For the steamer body, it was determined 80 cm in height and 50 cm in diameter. Meanwhile, the bottom of the steamer was designed with the same diameter but with a different height, 20 cm. The lid was designed 2 cm wider in diameter than the steamer to make it cover all the upper parts of the body steamer. The purpose is to maintain the stem in the steamer to cook the lontong. In the community service program, the team also gave training assistance to the industry regarding lontong steamers for safe application. Furthermore, the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the use of lontong steamer have also been provided to the industry.
Yepy Komaril Sofi'i, Sudarman Copyright (c) 2023 SCI-TECH MEDIA: COMMUNITY SERVICE JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25878 Sun, 16 Apr 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Eco-enzyme as the natural disinfectant: Increasing school community awareness on waste management https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25879
The increase of COVID-19 has influenced aspects of life in global including education. Recently, the Indonesian government has given allowance to schools for conducting offline teaching-learning processes. Preparation should be conducted to maintain the protection of the school environment, including teachers and students. Health protocols remain an important requirement. SD Muhammadiyah 08 Dau Malang was one of the schools that wanted to prepare for conducting the offline teaching-learning process. The preparation of this school was cleaning all the school areas and spraying disinfectant to prevent the contamination of bacteria and viruses. Yet, the principal of SD Muhammadiyah 08 Dau Malang is concerned about the students’ and teachers’ health considering the chemical substance in the disinfectant. Moreover, the cost of disinfectant is also the consideration of the principal for savings. The result of an interview with the principal and observation of the school environment, it needs an alternative disinfectant that contains a less chemical substance, is effective, and is inexpensive. The disinfectant should not cause respiratory infections and is not harmful to students who are children. Concerning the problems faced by SD Muhammadiyah 08 Dau Malang, the team of community service programs brings solutions by introducing eco-enzyme and its advantages for health and the environment. It can be used as a natural disinfectant made of fresh organic waste from the kitchen. It is not only the solution to environmental health and virus protection but also recycling and utilizing waste.
Suwarsono, Budiono, Herry Suprianto, Khusnul Hadi Copyright (c) 2023 SCI-TECH MEDIA: COMMUNITY SERVICE JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25879 Sun, 16 Apr 2023 00:00:00 +0700 Introducing the concept of energy conservation for elementary students through the Eduwisata program https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25880
Knowledge of energy conservation for elementary students is one of the education efforts to familiarize them with utilizing energy wisely at an early age. Therefore, this community service program is aimed to give knowledge to Elementary students on the use of energy through the Eduwisata program of Taman Rekreasi Sengkaling Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). In conducting the community service program, the team observed the activities of the Eduwisata program to know the problems faced by the team of the program. The result of observation is used to plan the material and module as the solutions to the problems. The interview is also conducted with the manager of Taman Rekreasi Sengkaling UMM to find out the potential problems. The result of this community service program is the students more interactively participate in the Eduwisata program when the team of the community service program guided them in learning the energy and its utilization. The well-prepared preparation of the guides for materials and modules during the explanation is the factor.
Moh. The materials that need analysis and critical thinking make them unable to solve the problems related to natural science. This community service program was conducted at a study group in Malang and was aimed to improve the student’s understanding of the concept of physics with Indonesian traditional toys. The observation was conducted to find out the problems faced by the students and the assistant of learning who assists them in learning physics. The community service program includes the classification of the toys based on the physics concept being learnt, the use of the toys as learning media and learning sources for students, and student’s understanding of the physics concept through traditional toys. These activities were conducted to focus students' learning in a fun way and train students to analyze phenomena that occur around them.
Andinusa Rahmandhika Copyright (c) 2023 SCI-TECH MEDIA: COMMUNITY SERVICE JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY https://ejournal.umm.ac.id/index.php/scitech_media/article/view/25881 Sun, 16 Apr 2023 00:00:00 +0700
