Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pembelajaran matematika yang masih bersifat teacher centered. Masih sedikit siswa yang aktif dan suasana kerjasama antar siswa belum tercipta selama pembelajaran. Melihat gejala tersebut, maka diterapkan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe student teams achievement division (STAD) dalam pembelajaran matematika pada siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 3 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan aktivitas belajar siswa pada kelas yang menerapkan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD. Hasil penelitian menunjukan aktivitas siswa dalam pembelajaran matematika yang cenderung meningkat.
