Abstract

Some studies mention that the first year of college is a difficult time. Students are required to be independent and adjust to the campus environment. Most students experience failure in adjusting and even cannot continue their education. Adjustment is not easy for someone who has experienced trauma. Trauma may make them experience failure in responding to stressful events. One form of trauma itself is child abuse. This study aims to determine the role of the experience of child abuse on self-adjustment in new students in college. The characteristics of participants in this study were freshmen who were still active and had experiences of violence in childhood and totaled 184 participants. Participants were selected using a sampling technique, namely purposive sampling technique.  Data collection in this study used questionnaires to measure the experience of childhood violence developed by Malik and Shah and college adjustment developed by Baker and Syrik.   Data analysis using simple linear regression analysis techniques resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.000, p < 0.05, which means that there is an effect of the experience of child abuse on self-adjustment in college. Based on the R Square test, the R value is 0.080, which means that the experience of child abuse has an effect of 8%.
